Could the Habs pursue Ovechkin?
TheFourthPeriod.com
First, it was Vincent Lecavalier. Now, it appears to be Alex Ovechkin.
The Montreal Gazette suggests the Canadiens could go after the Washington Capitals' superstar this summer if he isn't signed to a new contract by July 1, 2008.
Ovechkin, who ranks third in the NHL in goals with 24, is scheduled to become a restricted free agent after the season, and the Gazette reports he could be looking a new salary worth somewhere in the $9-million to $10-million range.
Granted, the Lecavalier rumors still pop up every now and again, the Ovechkin banter is starting to pick up steam.
As the Gazette notes, Ovechkin truly likes Montreal and isn't afraid to admit it. The Habs could try to sign the 22-year-old to an offer sheet, but it's uncertain if the Capitals would be willing to wave goodbye to the star in exchange for five first-round draft picks.
If Ovechkin hits the open market as an RFA, you can expect just about every team in the NHL to fire an offer his way.
With Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro locked up to a 15-year deal, and Flyers center Mike Richards inked to a new 12-year agreement, Ovechkin should receive a contract around that same length.
TFP has learned that negotiations between the Capitals and Ovechkin are expected to pick up in the New Year. If a deal does not transpire by the end of the season, the team may start worrying.
